The FAO Sugar Price Index of the month of May 1996 reached the 70.5 points, which meant a decline of -4.86% in relation to previous mensual index of April, that was 74.1 points (-3.6 pts), and was placed a -4.72% under the annual average of 73.99 points recorded (-3.49 pts).

The highest monthly value achieved throughout the year of 79.9 points was 13.33% higgher than the selected month (+9.4 pts), while the lowest value during the period was 66.3, that is 6.33% lower than the 70.5 points of May 1996 (-4.2 pts).

In relation to the values of the previous year, in May 1996 there was a year-on-year decline of -15.77%, 13.2 points under the 83.7 pts reached in the same month of 1995.
