The FAO Food Price Index of the month of May 1996 reached the 82.4 points, which meant an increase of 1.98% in relation to previous mensual index of April, that was 80.8 points (+1.6 pts), and was placed a 6.12% above the annual average of 77.65 points recorded (+4.75 pts).

The record of this month was the highest value achieved throughout the year, with a difference of 15.41% above the lowest monthly value , that was 71.4 points (-11 pts).

In relation to the values of the previous year, in May 1996 there was a year-on-year increase of 11.35%, 8.4 points above the 74 pts reached in the same month of 1995.
