Origin Prices

The origin middle value of the Food Prices Index along year 2017 reached the 2.021 euros. The highest weekly value achieved throughout the year was 2.5€, while the lowest descended to the 1.18€.

The average of 2017 was -0.05€ under the previous year, which represents an interannual difference of -2.37% with respect the 2.07 euros reached in 2016.

The middle value of 2017 is 2.07% above the interannual average of 2009/2023, a difference of 0.04 with respect the 1.98€ of the last 15 years. In the year-on-year graph below you can check the evolution of prices throughout the period in more detail.

Wholesale Prices

Regarding the wholesale average, this reached the 2.878 euros. The highest weekly value achieved throughout the year was 3.31€, while the lowest descended to the 2.67€.

The average of 2017 was 0.1€ above the previous year, which represents an interannual difference of 3.53% with respect the 2.78 euros reached in 2016.

The middle value of 2017 is 3.15% above the interannual average of 2009/2023, a difference of 0.09 with respect the 2.79€ of the last 15 years.

Retail Prices

Regarding the retail average, this reached the 5.571 euros. The highest weekly value achieved throughout the year was 5.78€, while the lowest descended to the 5.35€.

The average of 2017 was 0.13€ above the previous year, which represents an interannual difference of 2.41% with respect the 5.44 euros reached in 2016.

The middle value of 2017 is 5.91% above the interannual average of 2009/2023, a difference of 0.31 with respect the 5.26€ of the last 15 years.

Price Index Origin-Retail. This is the number of times the price is multiplied from what the producer receives to what the consumer pays (origin and retail)

Construction of Retail's Average Price of the Food Prices Index during 2017

Throughout the year 2017 averaged retail price of the 36 products collected in the Food Prices Monitor in Spain was 5.57€. On the other hand, the average of the prices at origin was 2.02 euros. That means, for each euro paid by the final consumers to acquire these products, the farmers received 36.3 eurocents.

As regards Distribution, the average of the prices collected by Mercasa that year stood at 2.878 euros, so that the second link in the agri-food chain was responsible of 15.4 cents in the construction of that euro paid in the shop. It must be taken into account that the spanish public company for the management of food distribution does not collect data on Butchery products, therefore both fresh chicken eggs and meat do not participate in the construction of this average.

In last place, during the marketing phase there was added the 48.3 cents remaning of the euro paid by the final buyer. In percentage terms, the difference between the average annual price in origin and retail was of 175.66%.

The Price Index Origin-Retail throughout the year 2017 was of (x)2.76. This PIOR indicates the number by which the price is multiplied from the farm to the consumer's table, the difference between what we pay for food in the store and the price the farmer sold it for.
