The origin middle value of Romaine Lettuce along year 2013 reached the 0.289 euros each piece. The highest weekly value achieved throughout the year was 0.4€/pc, while the lowest descended to the 0.16€/pc.

The average of 2013 was -0.07€ under the previous year, which represents an interannual difference of -19.72% with respect the 0.36 euros each piece reached in 2012.

Wholesale Prices

Regarding the wholesale average, this reached the 0.451 euros each piece. The highest weekly value achieved throughout the year was 0.56€/pc, while the lowest descended to the 0.35€/pc.

The average of 2013 was -0.04€ under the previous year, which represents an interannual difference of -7.96% with respect the 0.49 euros each piece reached in 2012.

Retail Prices

Regarding the retail average, this reached the 0.944 euros each piece. The highest weekly value achieved throughout the year was 0.98€/pc, while the lowest descended to the 0.9€/pc.

The average of 2013 was 0.04€ above the previous year, which represents an interannual difference of 4.89% with respect the 0.9 euros each piece reached in 2012.

Construction of Retail's Average Price of Romaine Lettuce during 2013

The averaged retail price of Romaine Lettuce throughout the year 2013 was 0.94€/pc. On the other hand, the average of the prices at origin was 0.29 euros each piece. That means, for each euro paid by the final consumers to acquire this product, the farmers barely received 30.6 eurocents.

As regards Distribution, the average of the prices collected by Mercasa that year stood at 0.451 euros, so that the second link in the agri-food chain was responsible of 17.2 cents in the construction of that euro paid in the shop to buy lettuces.

In last place, during the marketing phase price doubled, 52.2 cents of each euro paid by the final buyer. In percentage terms, the difference between the average annual price of romaine lettuce in origin and retail was of 226.64%.

The Price Index Origin-Retail for lettuce throughout the year 2013 was of (x)3.27. This PIOR indicates the number by which the price is multiplied from the farm to the consumer's table, the difference between what we pay for food in the store and the price the farmer sold it for.
